About Me

Oh, Hi there my friend!

I’m Kyla Richey and it’s very nice to e-meet you! I am super thankful you popped on over here and would love to get to know you better.

But first, let me share with you ten things on how I would describe myself:

➊ Volleyball player: I have been playing volleyball for as long as I can remember. It was in high school that I decided I wanted to commit to this sport. When I was 16 I made the Junior National Team and have been representing Canada on the International Stage ever since. I pursued my education at the prestigious University of British Columbia where our Thunderbirds team won 5 National Championships in a row. I have played professional volleyball for 8 years in the following countries: Germany, Turkey, Italy, Azerbaijan, Greece, Indonesia, Peru, and Puerto Rico.

➋ Mentor: one of my favourite things is connecting to younger aspiring athletes and helping them along on their unique journey. I know how truly important it is to have a positive female role model and take on this role with so much pride.

➌ Photographer: something I am just recently stepping into more officially but photography has always acted as a creative outlet for me. When traveling (or when I am anywhere, really) you can always find my with my camera, capturing memories I want to keep forever.

➍ Writer: I love creating and sharing content about anything and everything! Writing is a way that I can sift through my thoughts and really connect with myself on a deeper level.

➎ Lover of coffee: if you want to hang out, I’m always up for a cup.

➏ Nature: growing up on the Sunshine Coast, I learned to feel at peace in nature at a young age. Hiking, swimming, running in the forest — I love seeing what our world has to offer!

➐ Holistic Health: I have spent so much time focusing on the physical aspects of myself that much of the other realms fell off the radar. I am realizing now that I need to put my focus into all aspects of myself: spiritual, physical, and emotional. This is necessary for me to be the best version of myself.

➑ Creative: I would never have used this word to describe me in the past but professional volleyball life has given me a lot of time to dive into other hobbies such as writing, drawing, painting, and photography.

➒ Mental health advocate: after my brother passed away unexpectedly in 2013, I really suffered. I attempted to push all of my grief away as to not appear weak to others. I realized that there is so much negative stigma around mental health and I really felt that as a high performing athlete. I want to end the stigma around this and create a space where individuals can show up freely, without fear.

➓ Wife: last but not least. My husband Rudy and I got married in 2017. We were both professional athletes at the time and spent half of the year apart from one another playing in our respective countries. Long distance is not a fun time but it really taught us to communicate honestly with one another and cherish the time we did spend together.
